Samsung working on ‘perfect full-screen’ phone that hides its front camera under the display

A major feature of the Samsung Galaxy S10 phones are their hole-punch displays, which puts the device’s front-facing camera in a small cutout in the corner of the screen. According to a new report, though, Samsung is already working on a way to ditch the hole-punch.

Samsung is working on a way to make “perfect full-screen” smartphones that hide the front-facing camera and sensors beneath the screen. The camera and sensors would still work like normal, but they would be hidden below the display, giving you a full-screen look.

“Though it wouldn’t be possible to make (a full-screen smartphone) in the next 1-2 years, the technology can move forward to the point where the camera hole will be invisible, while not affecting the camera’s function in any way,” said Yang Byung-duk, VP of Samsung’s display R&D group.

Yang added that while the Infinity-O hole-punch display on the Galaxy S10 is a “milestone”, Samsung’s major focus is to make a phone with all of its sensors below the display.

There are already some smartphones that offer a “full-screen” look by moving the front-facing camera into a sliding or pop-up mechanism, but with those form factors come the worry about mechanical failure. Hiding the camera and sensors below the screen would avoid that while also just being a pretty cool technological achievement. Now we just have to wait and see if Samsung can pull it off.
