Qualcomm announces Snapdragon X55 5G modem

Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem

Just as we’re on the cusp of seeing the first 5G smartphones launch, Qualcomm has revealed a new 5G modem.

The Snapdragon X55 5G Modem is now official. This new 7nm single-chip modem is notable because it includes 5G to 2G support. It’s got 5G features like mmWave, sub-6GHz, non-standalone, standalone, FDD, and TDD, too, and Qualcomm says that it’s pushed the X55 to peak download speeds of 7Gbps and peak upload speeds of 3Gbps.

There are some notable 4G LTE features included with the X55 modem, too. It boasts Category 22 LTE with download speeds up to 2.5Gbps with specs like 7×20 MHz carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO, and up to 1024 QAM.

In addition to powering 5G smartphones, the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem can be used in a variety of non-phone products. Those include hotspots, Wi-Fi routers, Always Connected PCs, laptops, tablets, and connected cars.

We should see 5G smartphones hitting the market soon, including a 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the LG V50 ThinQ. These devices will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 modem rather than the X55, which means that they won’t have quite as wide networking support as devices that launch later with the X55. If you want to get on 5G early, though, these upcoming devices with the X50 modem will let you do it.
