The April Patch Tuesday not only brought updates for Windows 10
but also for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Direct download for
Windows 7 KB4093114 and Windows 8.1 KB4093118 is now
available on Microsoft’s Update Catalog. Microsoft has also
released the update over-the-air and you can install it from
Control Panel.

The latest cumulative updates for both Windows 7 and Windows
8.1 is focused on security and stability of the operating
system. Microsoft is of course not adding any new changes to
these operating systems as the company is working on Windows 10
Redstone 4. The fresh monthly rollups for Windows 7 and 8.1
comes with bug fixes and security patches.

The monthly patches are necessary to keep the computers
up-to-date and secure from the vulnerabilities. Microsoft has
also released security-only updates to allow the IT admins to
quickly deploy the patches that will only address
vulnerabilities and not the general bugs. The security-only
updates are aimed at known vulnerabilities and thus it comes
with no other changes.

First and foremost, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows
Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 are both getting the April Patch
updates.

Microsoft has removed the antivirus restriction which means
that the computers regardless of the antivirus solution are
eligible for the future updates. Microsoft in January had
introduced a registry check to block updates on some computers
with incompatible antivirus solutions that could cause issues.

Microsoft lifted the restriction in Windows 10 with the March
2018 updates but the company recently implemented the change in
Windows 7 and 8.1. Microsoft is finally removing this
restriction with the new monthly rollups for Windows 7 and 8,
which means you can update your PCs to the latest version
regardless of the antivirus solution.

“Windows Update and WSUS will offer this update to applicable
Windows client and server operating systems regardless of the
existence or value,” Microsoft explained.

With April update, Microsoft is also improving the reliability
of the kernel and the company has addressed an issue that can
cause apps to have unexpected memory contents on multiprocessor
systems. Internet Explorer is receiving a big update, Microsoft
says that they have fixed issues with ActiveX, custom controls
and rendering in the browser.

Microsoft is also releasing security updates to Internet
Explorer, Microsoft graphics component, Windows Server, Windows
datacenter networking, Microsoft scripting engine, Windows app
platform, frameworks, Windows virtualization and kernel.

The software giant is aware of two bugs in Windows 7, although
the issues would not be a big deal for general customers.
Microsoft says that BSOD could be experienced on
computers that don’t support Streaming Single Instructions
Multiple Data, and SMB servers may leak memory after installing
the updates.
