ZTE could lose Android license due to U.S. Commerce Department ban

One day after the U.S. Department of Commerce said it would ban U.S. companies from selling components to ZTE, news has now broke that hints that the situation could be even worse than originally thought.

ZTE may not be able to license Android from Google as a result of this U.S. Department of Commerce ban, says a source speaking to Reuters. ZTE has reportedly been meeting with Google to discuss the ban, but no decision on ZTE’s Android license has been reached.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s ban includes both parts and software, so it’s possible that ZTE could lose access to Google’s Android as a result of this ban. That could end up hurting it even more than losing access to Qualcomm processors, because outside of Android, there aren’t really any viable mobile OSes available.

It’s unclear what will happen from here, so we’ll just have to wait and see what Google and ZTE decide to do.
