While PAX West 2018 is kicking off, there’s also a consumer electronics trade show happening at the same time in Berlin, Germany called IFA. Sony executive Kenichiro Yoshida, who is taking over after Kaz Hirai announced his departure from his previous position, is attending the event. Despite the matter being quiet for a while, Yoshida spoke to the lingering cross-play issue, which of course was reignited during E3 2018 when Fortnite launched for the Nintendo Switch.

UK outlet The Independent reported on Yoshida’s statements, which suggest that Sony’s stance is that cross-play on games like Fortnite would “compromise” the gameplay experience on PS4. The quotes provided from Yoshida don’t exactly say that, but what he does say is certainly brand-oriented. Here’s the quote:

On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief.

Yoshida goes on to talk about how PS4 games do offer cross-play with PC versions of certain games. He also speaks to the Nintendo and Microsoft situation, which he says is good, healthy competition.

Finally, Yoshida moves on to speak about the state of VR, noting that there are improvements to be made, specifically that innovation could lead to a more safe augmented reality situation, and that motion sickness is also a matter in need of addressing.
