Notched displays are sort of like Jason Vorhees, in that they keep on coming whether you want them to are not. There’s no hiding from The Notch (cue the scary music). Even the budget smartphone market does not provide sanctuary from notched displays, as Motorola’s new One and One Power phones make crystal clear.
The Motorola One and One Power are a pair of Android One handsets. Android One, as you might recall, started off as an initiative focused on bringing lower cost smartphones to emerging markets
“Our goal is to reach the next 5 billion people in the world,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in 2014. “When I go back home to India and other countries like that, it is exciting to see the impact that phones have on lives, but it’s disappointing that only less than 10 percent of the population has access to smartphones. We want to change that.”
Android One has since expanded its reach and focus, and can be found on some higher end devices. Motorola’s new devices sort of fit that new mold. These are mid-range phones, with the regular Motorola one sporting a 5.9-inch HD+ display powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC with Adreno 506 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage.
The Motorola One Power kicks things up a notch with a 6.2-inch Full HD+ display, powered by a slightly faster Snapdragon 636 processor and the same storage configuration. Both phones also feature a microSD card slot with support for up to 256GB of additional storage.
For taking photos, these new phones wield an “advanced 13MP dual smart camera system”, plus an 8MP front-facing camera for selifies.
“These Android One smartphones give you the Android experience you love, three years of security updates and let you do more with a smart camera thanks to Google Lens. That’s just the beginning, because with your favorite moto experiences included, these smartphones are ready for you,” Motorola says.
The Motorola One will be available for €299 in Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific “in the coming months.” Motorola did not specify pricing for the One Power, but said it will ship in India starting in October.
