Microsoft holiday ad captures joy of video games and inclusion as boy uses Xbox Adaptive Controller

When Microsoft created the Xbox Adaptive Controller, it set out to bring all the joy of video games to those who might face limitations in their physical ability to play. A new holiday advertisement from the tech giant captures that joy.

The ad, titled “Reindeer Games,” looks like a scene out of a 2018 version of “A Christmas Story,” as neighborhood kids race to the house of a friend who is about to reach a milestone on a game he is playing.

The kid playing the game is Owen Simmons, a 9-year-old who was born with a rare genetic disorder called Escobar Syndrome.

“You gotta see this! Owen’s gonna do it!” kids shout as they race across snowy backyards and streets to join Owen in time to watch him conquer a game and to help him celebrate. Owen is shown using the Adaptive Controller.

The vision for the new controller dates back to 2014 and was developed in line with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s promise for the company “to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.”

The holidays will hopefully put smiles on a lot of faces this year. Seeing Owen’s shows how much inclusion plays a part in that. “When everybody plays, we all win,” the ad’s tagline reads.
