Around this time last year, Hewlett-Packard debuted the Omen 15 and Omen 17 gaming laptops, which were powered by Intel Kaby Lake processors and your choice of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 Series or AMD Radeon RX 500 Series GPUs. Today, HP is delivering an update to the Omen 15 which upgrades the internals while giving the exterior a nip/tuck.
On the hardware front, HP has outfitted the new Omen 15 with Intel’s 8th generation processors, including the Core i7-8750H (Coffee Lake) which can Turbo Boost to 4.1GHz and has six physical cores. Up to 32GB of DDR4 memory is supported, and you have a wide variety of HDD and SSD configurations to choose from, along with hybrid solutions and Intel Optane memory.
When it comes to graphics, HP gives you plenty of options including NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU options. If you choose the 15.6-inch 1080p IPS display option, you’ll be able to select from 60Hz or 144Hz panels. If you prefer a higher resolution display, there’s also an optional 4K (60Hz) panel available. If you want NVIDIA G-SYNC, that’s available as well.
Other features include a gaming keyboard with 26-key rollover and four lighting zones, Gigabit Wi-Fi, and a 70 WHr battery (HP says it’s good for just over 6 hours of runtime in mixed usage). Also included is a new feature within the Omen Command Center that allows you to further increase fan speeds in order to raise CPU and GPU clocks for an extra bit of performance. Speaking of the fans, HP has included fluid dynamic bearings and larger fins along with more vents to keep things cool.
As for the chassis, HP says that it has made the Omen 15 exactly 7.4 percent smaller (width) and 4.6 percent tidier with respect to depth. Gaming notebooks aren’t exactly known for their compact dimensions, so every little reduction is appreciated. The bezels around the sides of the display are 65 percent smaller, and the top bezel is 35 percent smaller. However, the same overall design aesthetic remains.
The HP Omen 15 goes on sale July 29th with a base price of $979.
