Facebook is testing a new way for users to get news on its service.
Facebook News is now in testing in the U.S. The feature will get a dedicated tab in the Facebook app and will feature content from four categories of news publishers: general, topical, diverse, and local news. It’ll also show relevant national stories of the day.
With Facebook News, you can choose which types of content you want to see. These include Top Stories, Your Subscriptions, Entertainment, Health, Business, Science & Tech, and Sports. You can also choose to hide publications that you don’t want appearing in your feed.
Publishers appearing in the Facebook News section must be in Facebook’s News Page Index, which it make along with the news industry to help identify news content. Publishers must also abide by Facebook’s Publisher Guidelines, which include a “range of integrity signals in determining product eligibility” like misinformation, community standards violations, clickbait, and engagement bait.
Finally, Facebook says that News will showcase local original reporting from publications in the largest U.S. metro areas. These will include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Houston, Washington D.C., Miami, Atlanta, and Boston.
Facebook News is being testing with a subset of users in the U.S., so you may not see it right away. Facebook says that it plans to learn from users and improve on News as it rolls out more broadly.
