When Apple first introduced AirPods, lots of folks poked fun at the truly wireless earbuds and the way they stuck out of wearers’ ears. Fast-forward to today and AirPods have become a surprise hit, though, and now a rumor claims that Amazon wants a piece of that success.
Amazon is working on a pair of wireless earbuds to take on Apple AirPods, according to a report from Bloomberg. The Amazon earbuds will reportedly work and look like AirPods, sitting inside your ear without using clips and living inside a charging case when not in use. However, Amazon is said to be working to make its earbuds sound better than Apple’s AirPods.
Because this is Amazon, a major online retailer, it’s expected that these rumored wireless earbuds will let you use your voice to order products as well as access music and weather info. You’ll be able to use Amazon’s Alexa assistant to perform actions or you can use physical gesture controls, like tapping to answer calls and change songs, if you’d rather not use your voice.
Amazon’s AirPods competitor are currently slated to launch in the second half of 2019. There’s no word yet on pricing, but Amazon is know for being aggressive when it comes to pricing products like its Echo smart speakers and Fire tablets, so the company could try to make their wireless earbuds cheaper than Apple’s AirPods, which start at $159.
While still unconfirmed, it’d be no surprise to see Amazon launch its own pair of wireless earbuds. The company has dipped its toes in the hardware waters several times to date, launching the Fire Phone, Fire tablets, Fire TV set top boxes, and Echo smart speakers. With the popularity of wireless earbuds like AirPods, it makes sense that Amazon would at least consider using its hardware experience to try its hand at wireless earbuds and attempt to capture some of the success that products like the AirPods have enjoyed lately.
