Back in November of last year, Amazon Web Services (AWS) unveiled the world’s first deep learning enabled video camera for developers, called DeepLens. Now more than half a year later, Amazon is finally taking orders for DeepLens. The asking price is $249 with free two-day shipping for Prime members, and while DeepLens may not look like a $249 video camera, it has some special capabilities that belie its modest appearance.
DeepLens is a fully programmable video camera designed to expand deep learning skills. This ability allows developers to run deep learning models locally on the camera itself to analyze and respond what it sees and records. For example, it can accurately detect and recognize objects, along with faces and more than 30 kinds of actions, such as brushing teeth, applying lipstick, and playing the guitar. It can even transfer the artistic style of an image, such as a painting, and transfer it to an entire video sequence.
The camera runs on Ubuntu and supports a broad framework of deep learning technologies, including TensorFlow, SageMaker, and Caffee. It also comes pre-installed with Apache MXNet, a high performance and efficient inference engine for deep learning. Amazon’s primary pitch with DeepLens is that it’s easy to use, and not restricted to developers with tons of experience in deep learning and artificial intelligence.
“AWS DeepLens allows developers of all skill levels to get started with deep learning in less than 10 minutes by providing sample projects with practical, hands-on examples which can start running with a single click,” Amazon says.
Inside the camera sits an Intel Atom X5 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. It uses Intel’s Gen9 graphics engine and offers around 106 gigaflops of performance. Other specs include a 4-megapixel 1080p sensor, two USB 2.0 ports, a micro HDMI port, an audio output, and a micro SD card slot.
